August Wrap Up: Summer can’t be over! I’m not ready for school!

imageedit_1_5523356880

So remember last month when I was like “Oh hey how did the summer go so fast?!?!?!”

Well now the summer is actually over and I’M NOT READY FOR SCHOOL TO START AGAIN.

I mean, I am…. but I really just want another month of summer before I have to face actual school work.

I could also use an extra month of summer to do the summer course work that I haven’t exactly started yet…. *cue frantic scrambling for my summer reading*

Talking about reading… I didn’t read as much as I planned to this month.

That’s mostly because of the road-trip I went on (more on that later). But even so, I still had a good reading month.

Books I have reviewed this month:

5‘s: Wait Till Helen Comes // Little Monsters
4 ‘s: Gemina // Cruel Crown // Haunting the Deep // Hunting Prince Dracula// P.S. I Like You
2 ‘s: A Week of Mondays
1 : Scrappy Little Nobody // The Infinity of You & Me // Dreamology

Books I’ve read but haven’t posted reviews for yet:

These reviews are coming soon along with a Throne of Glass themed giveaway. I’m planning on posting that this upcoming week!! So if you are a Throne of Glass fan, be sure to keep an eye out!!

Books I’m reading right now:

I’m almost done with City of Thieves (I have less than 50 pages to go), and I’m still in the beginning of The Breathless.

I really only read 10 books this month, but that’s still pretty good considering how busy I have been!

So what exactly have I been busy with?

  • I went on a huge road trip down the east coast with my best friend!! (Check out all the details in my post about it!!)
  • Setting up the epic Throne of Glass giveaway that I keep talking about (I promise it is coming and it is going to be amazing)
  • Taking care of Nike (our new puppy! who you can check out in the road trip post!)
  • Making sure I have everything I need for my dorm and for school
  • Seeing some friends that I haven’t seen in years (it was great!!)
  • Babysitting
  • Painting (or at least trying to…)
  • Visiting my cousin at her college
  • Dropping off my best friend at school and then going back to visit her a day later because separation is hard
  • Re-watching Suits because I haven’t seen it in years and it’s amazing
  • Watching the Game of Thrones season finale even though I haven’t watched since the middle of season three
  • Driving around aimlessly because I’m nostalgic and like seeing the town I grew up in
  • Driving past my old house enough times to raise suspicion because #ChildhoodMemories
  • Reading other blogs in all of my spare time

And now for a list of things that I probably should have done this month but haven’t gotten to yet:

  • MY FREAKING SUMMER COURSE WORK (I’m kind of screwed at this point)

Yeah that’s pretty much it. So I’m just gonna go ahead and call this month a win.

But guys I have some awesome news: I now have close to 650 blog followers!!! I seriously love you guys!!!

I also have no idea what prompts you to follow my humble little blog, BUT I’M NOT COMPLAINING!!! You guys really make me feel accomplished in life.

I don’t want to make this post too long, so I’m gonna wrap it up here… but I want to hear all about your August!

Did you read everything you wanted to?

Did you go on any adventures?

Did you do your summer course work? (Hahaha does anyone? Wait… don’t answer that)

Let me know how your month went in the comments below!!

Thanks for reading!!

Discussion: Why do we DNF books? What books were not worth picking up?

imageedit_1_4786114536

I’ve been putting off writing this post for a while. It’s actually painful for me to write, because some of these books were just SO TERRIBLE that it hurts my soul.

In this post, I’m going to be talking about why I DNF books, and about some books that I have DNFed.

It’s important for me to say, before I start this post, that I honestly gave these books everything I had. I hate giving up on books, and usually force myself through them in hopes of them getting better. That is stupid of me. So I’m also going to give you a list of books I definitely should have DNFed and didn’t because I’m stubborn and sometimes an idiot.

What does it mean to DNF?

DNF, or “did not finish” refers to a book that you never finished.

It literally just means that you didn’t finish the book.

Why do I DNF?

There are a lot of reasons people might not finish a book. But, usually, it’s because 1) the book is so bad that it is painful to read, 2) the book is super boring and you lose interest and can’t bring yourself to pick it up again, or 3) the book has some kind of offensive or harmful content.

I personally have DNFed for all of those reasons at some point or another.

What books have I DNFed?

I decided to write this post because I DNFed 2 books in the month of July. TWO!!! Here they are:

29868610Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick was given to me by my librarian to try out. I usually like memoirs (even if I don’t read a whole bunch of them) but I just could not get on board with Kendrick’s writing. I’ve never really liked Anna Kendrick, but I don’t dislike her either, so I thought that this might be a fun book to read. But I found myself cringing at how she wrote. Everything about this book just annoyed me, and I got antsy every time I picked it up and tried to read a little more of it. Finally, after two weeks of trying, I DNFed at about 50%

28220701I’ve had an ARC of The Infinity of You & Me by J. Q. Coyle sitting in my room for about a year (I know, I know, that’s way too long, also thank you to the published and authors for getting this to me), and I finally got myself to read it. I was immediately confused, and found both the writing style and the plot cringey. I kept thinking that the book was going to sort itself out and get exciting at some point, but no matter how hard I tried, I did not enjoy any of it. The characters seemed forced and I didn’t like them at all. The plot was trying too hard and full of annoying clichés. Honestly I think this book could have used a few more drafts. I DNFed at about 30%.

Besides those two books, I can only remember DNFing two others… both over a year ago.

22510983If you couldn’t tell by my recent Hate-Haiku, I really REALLY didn’t like this book. At. All. I wrote a review for it a long time ago, right after I read/DNFed it (you can read that here if you so desire), and honestly this is one of the worst books I have ever laid eyes on (which is painful to say considering how beautiful the book looks). It’s hard to talk about this book without getting mad. I had such high hopes for this one and the premise was super amazing and the FLOP. So. Painful. Everything. About. This. Book. Was. Terrible. I can’t remember exactly how far into it I was when I DNFed, but it was before the 50% mark… and I’m honestly surprised I made it that far.

6186357I’m pretty sure that I watched the movie before I tried the book. Yeah, that’s kind of a no-no, but I’m kind of a rebel (haha I wish) so I do it anyway sometimes….

But I didn’t really like the movie. So then I picked up the book, thinking “well, the movie wasn’t so bad… I’ll probably like the book more.” I WAS WRONG. I tried to read this for so long and I actually made it to around 90% when I just couldn’t anymore. It was too bad… too painful. But I should have known. If Dylan O’Brian can’t make it good, no one and nothing can.

Books I definitely should have DNFed.

For every book that I DNFed, there are 10 books that I should have DNFed. Why didn’t I DNF these? Because some silly part of me kept whispering “it will get better… just hang in there.”

Whoever said to listen to your gut obviously hasn’t met my gut…

So here are some of the books that I should have DNFed. Consider yourself warned:

I pushed through these books with sheer will power, but I honestly regret reading them. I didn’t really enjoy any, and I certainly didn’t get anything out of them. I think the only one I didn’t review on my blog was Quarantine (because I read it before I started blogging), but you can read my reviews of the other books here:

Fangirl // Unscripted // Fallen // As I Wake // The Love Interest

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so obviously there are people out there who loved the books I couldn’t stand.

I’m not trying to tell you that you have to hate the books that I hate. If you loved any of these books, that’s great! I’m honestly glad that someone was able to find something in these books that I couldn’t.

Talk to me:

What books did you DNF? Have you read any of the books I mentioned above? Did you like them? What is the last book that you had to DNF?

July Wrap Up: Where did the summer go?!? How did I read 25 books?!?

imageedit_5_3454177003

HOW IS JULY OVER ALREADY?!?!?!?!?! IT WAS LITERALLY MAY YESTERDAY. WHAT THE WHAT?

No but seriously I’m having a crisis here. Where did July go?

I haven’t done a wrap up in forever. Probably because last time I checked it was still May 2nd and no where near the end of a month… much less the end of the summer! AHHHHH

Breathe Emma, breathe.

I’m just now realizing the sheer number of books I have read this month.

I’ve kind of been in a reading binge, which has been wonderful. BUT THAT MEANS I’VE BEEN POSTING SO MANY REVIEWS!!

There are also a bunch of books that I read that I haven’t posted reviews for yet… so I’m gonna split this up into two sections:

Books I have Reviewed This Month:

Links to the Reviews:

5 ‘s:  The Anatomical Shape of a Heart //  King’s Cage //  A Midsummer’s Nightmare
4 ‘s:  The Hidden Oracle //  Glass Sword //  How To Hang A Witch //  Just Friends //  Cress //  The Wood //  Traveler
3 ‘s: Illuminae // Winter // Caraval
2 ‘s:  The Book Jumper // #famous //  Romeo and/or Juliet
1 ‘s:  As I Wake

Books I have Read this Month but Haven’t Posted Reviews for Yet:

The Infinity of You & Me and Scrappy Little Nobody were actually both DNFs, so I’m going to be publishing a post on DNFs pretty soon.

The Throne of Glass series is amazing so far, and I’m going through them like nobody’s business. I’m planning a series review rather than individual reviews, because why not?

I am going to be a part of the “A Short History of the Girl Next Door” blog tour in September, so my review for that will be in the blog tour post.

And the other two reviews are drafted, I just haven’t had a chance to post them yet!

Woah… I have read 25 books this month?! I’m in awe of myself. I might need to go get ice cream to celebrate.

Any excuse for ice cream, am I right?!

So, along with reading a record amount of books, here are some of the posts and tags I have published this month:

The Dreaded Book Slump: Why they happen and how to beat them

Why did I write this post? I was so obviously not in a book slump. Maybe I just wanted more people to join my book binge? Idk…

Author Q&A with Peyton Garver

It’s been a while since I posted an author Q&A, but I’m so glad I got to interview Peyton! She is so nice, and her book, Sublime Karma, sounds amazing!! (I have a copy of it sitting on my TBR pile, so I’ll write a review of it eventually!)

Discussion: WHAT’S WITH ALL THE GREEN EYES IN YA? Have all other eye colors been banned?

In which I talk about the over abundance of green eyes. Seriously, I know like 3 people with green eyes. Something is wrong here.

Comparing US and Foreign Edition Covers

Because book covers are beautiful, and I love looking at foreign edition covers!

The Book Titles Tag

Welcome to the title of my life. Read at your own risk. Featuring: Food: A Love Story

You are probably wondering right now if I have a life offline. That’s a good question. I’m not really sure anymore. Here is what I have done this month:

  • Binge watched The Night Shift (in which Jill Flint plays Jordan, a female doctor)
  • Binge watched (this is an ongoing binge) Royal Pains (in which Jill Flint plays Jill, who runs the hospital) (totally coincidence by the way..  I had no idea she was in either show)
  • Wrote 40,000 words for Camp Nano (a project that will probably never see the light of day)
  • Became a volunteer librarian at my local library
  • Stayed over at a friends house because I haven’t seen her in forever (it was a blast!)
  • Got a head cold from my younger brother when he (and my two other brothers and dad) visited me (seriously dude, cough into your arm)
  • Had three (yes 3!!!) picnics while my family visited.
  • Mowed the lawn, twice
  • Went to target to buy dorm essentials for the school year (which is coming wayyy to fast)
  • Chopped my hair off (waist length to shoulder length) and got bangs.

When did I sleep? What’s my secret?

HAHAHAHA good question. I don’t sleep. As I said in my Book Titles Tag, I am the Queen of Shadows.

AKA I am never asleep. It’s becoming a problem.

BUT IN OTHER NEWS I AM ALMOST AT 500 BLOG FOLLOWERS!!!!!

HOLY COW GUYS, YOU ARE AMAZING AND I HAVE SO MUCH LOVE FOR ALL OF YOU!!!

Also, I’ll be running a giveaway when I do hit 500. I’m thinking either a book of the winner’s choosing (from book depository) or maybe an ARC? Let me know in the comments what you would want to win!!

And finally, to wrap up this wrap up, here are some of my favorite posts from other bloggers this month!

The “Never Have I Ever” vlog from Paper Fury and her sister!

I love Paper Fury! Her blog is amazing and 100% goals. Also this vlog was hilarious and I was laughing the whole time!

Ten Weird Habits of Mine from Bionic Book Worm

These habits are so relatable!!

Books that aren’t set in/inspired by The Western World from My Bookish Dream

This post showcases some amazing books (like The Forbidden Wish ) that are set away from the Western World.

The Dreamy Book Covers Tag from Reactionary Tales

Because I think we all know by now how much I love a pretty book cover!

August is on the horizon.

I’m not a big planner (which I why I don’t do monthly TBRs), but I do have some pretty exciting plans for this month.

  • I have a friend from school coming to stay with me for a week (probably, she hasn’t gotten her tickets quite yet)
  • My best friend and I are going on a road trip together!!!!!
  • I have an ARC of Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco to read (and I can’t wait to start it)
  • I have some AMAZING blog posts lined up for you guys (or at least I think they are amazing… hopefully you’ll agree)
  • and of course I’m going to be doing a lot of blog surfing, so I can see all of your amazing posts!

And that’s my July Wrap up! What have you guys been up to this month?

Thanks for reading!!
