Down the TBR Hole #2- I am a book hoarder trying to let go

imageedit_1_3447879772.jpg

I am back with the second installment of my TBR cleanse. As you can probably tell by the title, I’m kind of a book hoarder… and even hoard books that I don’t have (aka: keeping books on my TBR that I’m probably never going to read).

I’m doing my best….

Since my last post, I have added a huge number of new books to my TBR, which is super counter-productive. So, because of that, I am going to do 10 books today instead of 5.

Gotta get on top of this before I’m buried by my ever-growing TBR.

If you want to know more about how the TBR cleanse works, visit my first post here, where I included all the “rules”.

So, without further ado, let’s jump right in!

1. Die for Me by Amy Plum

9462812Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

Okay so I’m pretty sure I added this book to my TBR just for the cover. I mean, look at it!! It’s gorgeous!

The plot also sounds interesting, but honestly, I don’t see myself ever reading this. I don’t think this book brings anything to the table that I haven’t seen before, over and over again.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

2. A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

3682Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

This book sounds awesome: a Victorian boarding school, a dangerous clique of girls, and some seer powers.

Buuuttt…. honestly what is with all the dead parents? Why does it seem like every book like this one features the death of parents or just dead parents? It’s kind of getting on my nerves at this point. This book sounds good, but I don’t know if I would ever actually pick it up.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

3. The Strange Power by L. J. Smith

258468Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

Psychically gifted students.

Ummmm, cool? But considering I didn’t like any of the other books I read by L. J. Smith, I have no idea how this book made it on to my TBR. I’m never going to read it. It’s just not going to happen.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

4. Forgive my Fins by Tera Lynn Childs

6710476Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

I love mermaids. I will always love mermaids (and if I ever say I don’t… that’s how you’ll know I’ve been possessed. Get the salt). But, looking back at this book, I don’t think I’d enjoy it. It sounds really corny and way too young for me. I would probably be cringing throughout the whole book.

Not really my idea of a good read.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

5. Hunting Lila by Sarah Alderson

10188580Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

Again with the dead parents. My gosh.

This book sounds good, I guess, but again I don’t think it’s going to bring anything that I haven’t seen before. I obviously liked/wanted to read a certain kind of book back in 2013… and I think I’ve moved on to new kinds of books. I guess I just got tired of those tropes. (But that means that this TBR cleanse is going surprisingly well!!)

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

6. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

8591107Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

I actually really want to read this book. This is one of the only books from back in 2013 that I have actively thought about, and almost got a few times (although other books keep distracting me).

I think I will get to this book one day, and I hope I like it when I finally do.

Verdict: Staying
Goodreads

7. Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

11750412Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

This book actually sounds really good. Basically every other day, Kali is normal, and the days in-between she is a monster hunter.

I feel like this book would be something new, but that could mean I either love it or hate it…

I don’t know if I’ll ever actually get to this book, but I think I want to keep it around for now.

Verdict: Staying
Goodreads

8. Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday

10429033Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

Dead bodies and school drama. This really sounds like a book I would have liked 5 years ago.

But it is not 5 years ago and I am really doing my very best here. And if I’m being completely honest, I don’t think this is a book I’m ever going to realistically pick up.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

9. Haunting Violet by Alyxandra Harvey

8685644Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

Violet pretends to be a medium…. only she can really see ghosts, and now they wont leave her alone.

This book sounds spooky and good. I still love reading about ghosts (and have been reading a lot of ghost-centric books lately), but I don’t really think that I would enjoy this one. I don’t see myself picking it up.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

10. Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

18189606Added to my TBR on: May 20, 2014 (yup, a whole year went by…)

I was watching booktube the other day and saw a review of this book. And it sounds like the kind of book I would not be able to stand.

It’s no secret that I’m really not into contemporary, and this sounds like it is literally the epitome of everything I can’t stand about contemp.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

Wow I’m actually so proud of myself right now. That was ruthless.

Down the TBR Hole #1- I am a book hoarder trying to change her ways

imageedit_1_8430295221

My TBR has gotten huge.

Yeah, some people have bigger ones, but as a person who likes to pretend their life is organized, I need to start cleaning up this list before it overwhelms me (more than it already has).

When I came across Lia’s Down the TBR Hole post, it was the motivation I needed to finally get this corner of my life into some sort of shape.

Here is how this TBR cleaning works:

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

I don’t know if I’ll be able to do this every week, but I’m going to try!

Let’s cleanse this monstrosity:

1. The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

10215349Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

Looking at this book again, after so many years of not remembering it existed, my first thought was: “This one is totally going.”

Then I read the description, and even though it is a vampire book, and I am over my whole vampire phase, I find myself strangely wanting to read this book… badly.

Verdict: Staying
Goodreads

2. Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Added to my TBR on: May 9, 20135287473

I actually read this book before I put it on my TBR, so I guess I wanted to re-read it? I don’t remember much about this witch-y magical book other than I liked it… when I read it way back when. I don’t know if I am ever going to pick this one up again, but after reading the synopsis, I am yet again intrigued.

Verdict: Staying
Goodreads

*You’re probably figuring out by now how much of a hoarder I am….

3. Need by Carrie Jones

4070493Added to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

I added this book to my TBR not because I necessarily wanted to read it, but because Carrie Jones came to my school for an author talk. It’s never really interested me, and I honestly have no idea why I’ve kept it around for this long.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

4. The Lying Game by Sara Shepard

untitledAdded to my TBR on: May 9, 2013

Despite not being able to get into the TV show, I did enjoy the one PLL book I read. I’m pretty sure that’s why I put this book on my TBR. The synopsis still does sound interesting to me, but, if I’m being completely honest here, I don’t think I’m ever going to realistically pick this book up.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

5. Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz

mmmAdded to my TBR on: May 9, 2013 (I was obviously a busy little bookworm that day…)

And another vampire book. WOOOOOWWWWW.

This one has a cool spin on it: the vampies came over on the Mayflower and have been guarding their secret for hundreds of years. I probably would have loved this book back in ’13, but it interests me no more.

Verdict: Going
Goodreads

AHHH it feels so good to get some books off my ever-growing-list (even if two more are going to grow in their place)

Whelp, that’s all I got for you today! Do you ever feel like your TBR is getting a little out of hand? How do you manage it?

Have you read any of the 5 books above? If you did, what did you think of them?

Thanks for reading!!

TBR Book Tag

book-692575_1920

Hi everyone! I saw the TBR (to be read) book tag over on Book  Boodle and decided to do it. It looks like so much fun!

How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

A couple different ways. I have a few lists over on Goodreads to try and keep track of the ever growing list. Right now I have a pile of hard copy books in my room and a bunch of books in my Kindle and iBooks libraries. I guess I just pick whatever stands out to me when I’m searching for a new book to read on the list.

Is your TBR mostly print or eBook?

It’s probably and equal mix of both. I like reading hard copy more, but they are so much harder to get. So, whenever I find myself at Barnes & Noble I pick up 4 or 5 books and when I finish those I switch over to eBooks, until I end up back at the book store again.

How do you decide which book from your TBR to read next?

I think it really depends on my mood. When it’s time for me to pick a new book I usually spend an hour staring at the different covers and reading the backs of the books, until one jumps out at me.

Unless I am reading a really good series. Then the next book to read is a no brainer!

What book has been on your TBR the longest?

9460487Hmm. That’s a hard one to answer. It’s probably Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (which I have been trying to get to since I saw it in the book store a few years ago. I have a paper back on my books shelf waiting to be read right now).

18805623The Tenderness of Thieves has also been on my TBR for quite some time. It’s hidden somewhere under a pile of other books in my room, so when I go for a new book I usually miss it.

What books have you recently added to your TBR?

The most recent book I’ve added is Martini Henry. Naomi Mantin (the senior press officer for Trans World Books) was kind enough to send me a copy to read! I can’t wait to start it.

What book is strictly on your TBR because of the cover?

To be honest, most of them are. Unless they are huge best sellers that everyone I know has 22510983read and loved, I pick my books by their covers. When I go to Barnes & Noble (which is totally my favorite store) I walk around the book shelved for hours, picking up any books whose cover catches my eye. Then I 13597728narrow it down by reading the back cover and a random page in the middle of the book.

That being said, there are few books that just have AMAZING cover art (even more amazing than the others), such as Girl Online by Zoe Sugg and Asylum by Madeline Roux.

What is a book in your TBR that you never planned on reading?

All of them really. Like I said before, when I go book shopping, I just let the books speak to me. I tend to stay away from the main stream “best seller” books in the front of the store and wander into the back shelves of the novel section. I always end up finding something amazing to read.

What books on your TBR has everyone read but you?

Not that many. I do get my fair share of popular books in. Those are usually the eBooks I read. However, I do keep meaning to read To Kill a Mockingbird, which I never end up doing. I’ll get to it one day.

What is a book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you?

That’s kind of a tricky question for me. I tend not to read books just because people recommend them. The last time I did, I read The Fault in Our Stars. To be honest I didn’t really like the book, and decided just to stick to my gut after that.

What book on your TBR are you dying to read?

23207027All of them really. Being as picky as I am, if there was a book I wasn’t 100% psyched to read, it probably wouldn’t be on my list.

But Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake is probably highest on my list. It’s coming out in September of 2016, and I can’t wait! Kendare Blake is one of my absolute favorite authors, and the synopsis of the book sounds amazing. If it is anywhere near as good as her other books, I will probably end up reading it a lot more than once!

How many books are on your Goodreads TBR?

22 right now, but that’s only a part of my whole list. If I added in the hard copies and eBooks I would probably be closer to 50-70 books. It might sound like a lot, but I know people with TBR’s of 500-700 books (I have no idea how the find the time!).

Thanks for taking the time to read! If you decide to use this tag, feel free to add a link to your post in the comments. I would love to read your answers!
